ASEM Hosts Groundbreaking Semiconductor Workshop To Bridge Academia With Industry

In a bold move to reshape Malaysia’s semiconductor landscape, the Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia (ASEM) recently hosted a transformative Train-the-Trainer workshop at the Malaysia Semiconductor IC Design Park.

This pivotal event, conducted in collaboration with Brazil’s leading Von Braun Labs and under the auspices of the Brazil x Malaysia Bilateral Semiconductor Programme, is meant to foster closer ties between academia and industry.

Themed “Delivering the Next Gen of Chip Builders”, the workshop trained 60 lecturers from 19 universities nationwide, with participants engaging in hands-on sessions aimed at preparing the next generation of semiconductor engineers for the global stage.

Central to the workshop was the introduction of ChipInventor, Von Braun Labs’ revolutionary cloud-based EDA platform powered by AWS. This accessible tool promises to democratise chip design by enabling real-time collaboration and reducing reliance on costly hardware setups.

ASEM General Manager Angel Low said the workshop is one of the academy’s many efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s semiconductor industry.

“We’re building global partnerships with Von Braun Labs, among others such as ARM, TSMC, MediaTek, Vanguard, and Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology to ensure our university partners gain access to world-class knowledge, skills, and technology.

“This marks the start of a long-term push to position Malaysia as a hub for semiconductor Innovation,” Low added.

Looking ahead, Low revealed that ASEM is committed to producing 20,000 industry-ready engineers over the next five years.
