The Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia (ASEM), formerly known as AI Nusantara, is on a mission to tackle one of the biggest challenges facing Malaysia’s booming semiconductor industry: the skill gap. Rebranded in October 2024, ASEM has broadened its focus beyond artificial intelligence to include all things semiconductor, perfectly aligning with the country’s National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS).
Bridging Industry and Education Together
ASEM is doing more than just running training programs—we are building bridges between universities, industries, and the workforce of tomorrow. By teaming up with both public and private academic institutions, we ensure that our courses aren’t just relevant but also practical. Students learn real-world skills that make them job-ready from day one.
Big Investments, Bigger Opportunities
In October 2024, GEM Education stepped up in a big way pledging RM100 million to support ASEM’s mission (theSun, 2024)! This funding isn’t just about boosting ASEM’s programs—it’s about positioning Malaysia as a leader in the global semiconductor Market. With this backing, ASEM can double down on developing top-tier talent and advancing research to keep Malaysia competitive.
ASEM’s Role in Malaysia’s Semiconductor Talent Development
The NSS is about more than just making chips—it’s about building local companies that can specialize in advanced areas like IC design and wafer fabrication. Our focus on talent development is critical to making this vision a reality. By producing skilled graduates ready to work in these specialized areas, ASEM is helping Malaysia move up the semiconductor value chain.
Two new programs are set to make waves:
- National Semiconductor Excellence Program (NSEP): Aimed at recognizing and nurturing top talent nationwide.
- Global Semiconductor Exchange Program (GSEP): Connecting Malaysian students with international opportunities for learning and collaboration.
These initiatives ensure that students not only excel locally but also gain exposure to the global semiconductor landscape.
Keeping It Fresh and Future-Proof
Technology moves at lightning speed, and the whole point of ASEM is to provide industry-relevant training programs so we definitely can’t afford to fall behind! That’s why we do not just rely on industry insights, but also work closely with industry and research institutions. By staying in tune with industry advancements and global trends, ASEM ensures its curriculum isn’t just relevant but also ahead of the curve.
This holistic approach—combining input from industry, academia, and cutting-edge research—means students are equipped with the skills they need to thrive in the constantly evolving semiconductor world. Whether it’s learning the latest IC design or staying updated on breakthroughs in wafer fabrication, ASEM wants to be one step ahead.
ASEM Designing the Future
Our hands-on programs, industry partnerships, and innovative approach to education are transforming students into skilled professionals ready to make an impact. With exciting initiatives like NSEP and GSEP on the way, we are ensuring Malaysia’s semiconductor industry remains a global contender.
